Operation of a system having both hydro andthermal plants is a challenging problem as hydro plantshave negligible operating cost, but are required tooperate under constraints of water available for hydrogeneration in a given period of time. The problem ofminimizing the operating cost of a hydrothermalsystem can be viewed as one of minimizing the fuel costof thermal plants underconstrains of water availabilityfor hydro generation over a given period of operation.Earlier, a wide variety of optimization techniques haveapplied to solve the Hydrothermal scheduling problemssuch as dynamic programing, gradient search but thesemethods has drawbacks such as large computationtime, algorithm complexity. The work done in thiswork presents solution to short-term hydrothermalscheduling problem. The solution approach based onParticle Swarm Optimization (PSO) under matlabsoftware.
