Abstract

Dredging activities are necessary for maintenance of existing navigation channels, and construction of new portand harbor facilities. This continued need to dredge will produce millions of cubic yards of material each year throughoutthe world. Much of this material will be determined to be not suitable for unconfined aquatic disposal due to unacceptablelevels of chemicals in the sediments. The Contaminated Sediment Task Forces have recognized that a need exists to develop acomprehensive strategy to deal with contaminated sediments generated in the dredging process.
