Heat transfer surface enhancement is required for heat exchanger systems in order to obtain
reduction in their operating costs. Heat transfer performance of a conventional heat exchanger can be improved by using
heat transfer augmentation methods. Passive vortex methods are being used for increasing heat transfer rate in heat
exchangers since long times. In this review of heat transfer enhancement through use of passive vortex generators, the
theoretical basis for the method is discussed and its implementations in simple heat exchangers as well as solar
parabolic rough receiver are reviewed. The aim of this survey is to critically review recent progress and to identify
research needs in the area of vortex-induced heat exchanger enhancement.
