Abstract

Transmission line structures are often constructed from steel lattice structures, due to their ease of assembly
and due to their light weight, which results in relatively small foundations. Transmission line towers, though designed
per code provisions, may fail during mandatory testing required in many countries. Different types of premature failures
that were observed during full-scale testing of transmission line towers at Tower Testing and Research Station,
Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai (CSIR-SERC) are studied, and the results are discussed in detail. Due
to the complicated load conditions and the nonlinear interaction among the large number of structural components,
accurate structural analysis of the LTT systems has been a challenging topic for many years. Still today there are some
gaps between research and industrial practice. This paper presents a summary of research outcomes from current
literature.
