Abstract

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are unique materials which have ability to undergo large deformations and also
regain its undeformed shape by removal of stress or by heating. This unique property could be effectively utilized to
enhance the safety of civil structures. This paper presents the fundamental characteristics of shape memory alloy and
some of the application of shape memory alloy in civil structures.
