Due to the deregulation of the electrical market, difficulty in acquiring rights-ofway to build new transmission lines, and steady increase in power demand, maintainingpower system stability becomes a difficult and very challenging problem and it may alwaysnot be possible to dispatch all of the contracted power transactions due to congestion of thetransmission corridors. The ongoing power system restructuring requires an opening ofunused potentials of transmission system due to environmental, right-of-way and costproblems which are major hurdles for power transmission network expansion. Flexible actransmission systems devices can be an alternative to reduce the flows in heavily loadedlines, resulting in an increased loadability, low system loss, improved stability of thenetwork, reduced cost of production and fulfilled contractual requirement by controlling thepower flows in the network. A method to determine the optimal location and cost Analysis ofthyristor controlled series compensators (TCSC) has been suggested in this paper based onreduction of total system reactive power loss and real power performance index. Theproposed method has been demonstrated on IEEE 30 Bus power system in PSAT (PowerSystem Analysis & Simulation Toolbox) for effectiveness of the study.
