Abstract

The ability of biological treatment of produced water, that separated from petroleum hydrocarbons wasevaluated using rotating biological contactor (RBC) reactor. A strain of Pseudomonas alkanolytica ATCC 21034 havebeen examined to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons separate in surface water. Some environmental parameters willinfluence on biodegrade of hydrocarbons to find the optimum conditions. Therefore, this study were investigated variousparameters include: initial biomass concentrations, dodecane concentrations and number of stages rotating. Differenttests was performed by varying initial biomass from (0.125, 0.250 and 0.4) mg/l. The appropriate conditions initialbiomass for biodegradation were observed at 0.25 mg/l. Dodecane as substrate was studied at varied concentrations(0.5, 1 and 2%) v/v that equivalent as (221.2, 442.4 and 884.8 mg/l) respectively. Results showed the highbiodegradation was obtained at 2% v/v. The size of biodegradation increased when higher dodecane concentrationswere applied. A set of experiments have been carried out at varied number of rotating as a bioreactor (1- 4). Resultsexposed the quantity efficiency of biodegradation was more than 87.9% when the number of stages rotating was 4 stages.
