The range of the possible fault current, the resistiveground fault detection, theremote infeed and directionality, the system configuration, and theheavy loaded and swing conditions areall part of the transmission line distance protection problems. In thispaper, all these problems are highlighted through the analysis of thepilot distance relay performance for transmission lines with different lengths. The value of Maximum Torque Angle (MTA) and its affects on the relay sensitivity during resistive ground fault, and theminimum loadability limit of the relay and the load encroachmentproblem are also investigated. All these analytical studies are carried out on IEEE 9-Bus system that is modeled by MATLAB Simulinkpackages. Also, the relay scheme is implemented and tested using MATLAB m-code.
