Abstract

Treatment of tannery effluent is generally carried out by physical, chemical, biological or the Combination ofthese methods. Tannery effluent is highly complex, characterized by high content of organic and inorganic chromium,suspended solids and dissolved solids, with COD range from 6500 to 8500 mg/L. Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge BlanketReactor [UASBR] is a versatile anaerobic reactor. Substances of the sludge blanket are more dependent on thebiodegradability, and the nutrients offer an edge for treating biodegradable waste stream such as tannery. The present studyevaluated the performance of UASB, a laboratory model of 25 liters for treating the tannery effluent. The prototype modelwas tested against its treatment efficiency in terms of COD reduction. The experiment was conducted for varying influentCOD concentration of 6555, 7027, 7571, 8104 and 8545 mg/L with the flow rates of 4.8, 9.6, 14.4, 19.2 and 24 L/dayrespectively. The experimental work on UASBR model for treating the tannery waste stream was proved successful at CODremoval of 77 % for the operating conditions of OLR of 0.09 kg COD /day and HRT of 5.2 h.
