Heat transfer enhancement techniques refer to different methods used to increase rate of heat transfer withoutaffecting much the overall performance of the system. These techniques are used in heat exchangers. Some of theapplications of heat exchangers are-in process industries, thermal Power plants, air-conditioning equipments, refrigerators, radiators for space vehicles, automobiles etc. These techniques broadly are of three types viz. passive, active and compoundtechniques. Passive techniques, where inserts are used in the flow passage to augment the heat transfer rate, areadvantageous compared with active techniques, because the insert manufacturing process is simple and these techniques canbe easily employed in an existing heat exchanger. In design of compact heat exchangers, passive techniques of heat transferaugmentation can play an important role if a proper passive insert configuration can be selected, according to the heatexchanger working condition (both flow and heat transfer conditions). In the past decade, several studies on the passivetechniques of heat transfer augmentation have been reported. The present paper is a review of the passive enhancementtechniques used in the recent past.
