Abstract

Swirl flows offer an interesting field of study foraerospace and mechanical engineers in general and forcombustion engineers in particular since it involves complexinteraction of recirculation and turbulent mixing which aid flamestabilization in combustion systems. Swirling flow generatesrotating flows, turbulence and free jet wakes at the downstreamof swirler in combustion chamber. So there is complexinteraction between pressure gradients and fluid flow. Swirlingjets are used as a means of controlling flames in combustionchambers. Swirling flows in both reacting and non- reactingconditions occur in wide range of applications such as gasturbines, marine combustor burners, chemical processingplants, rotary kilns and spray dryers. Swirling jets are usedas a means of controlling flames in combustion chambers. Thisflame stabilization can be achieved by various methods. Themost common techniques used in a gas turbine combustor is tostabilize the flame in modern gas turbine combustors is swirlstabilization in which a swirl velocity is imparted to the inlet airusing vane swirlers. Such flows have practical applications inmany combustion systems, such as industrial furnaces and gasturbine combustors. Air swirlers are widely used in both tubular& annular combustors. Swirler flow has been commonly used forthe stabilization of high-intensity combustion. Swirl can reducecombustion lengths by producing higher rates of entrainment ofambient fluid and fast mixing close to exit nozzle and on theboundaries of recirculation zones in strongly swirling zones.
