A DC to DC converter is a lossless dc transformer that mustsupply regulated output voltage under varying load and inputvoltage condition as well as the converter parameter valueschanges with time and physical quantity like temperatureetc. This paper presents the design and simulation of an open loopbuck converter in MATLAB/Simulink and also the calculation ofvarious losses of components used in buck converter. Whenefficiency estimation is required in the design, losses in Buckcircuit should be considered. The efficiency can be improved byreducing the losses and the reliable and low-cost power systemcan be designed. The selection of component affect the efficiency,so to improve the efficiency proper selection of component isrequired to be considered. The ideal dc-dc converter exhibits100% efficiency; in practice, efficiencies of 70% to 95% aretypically obtained due to the losses of selected components. Theselection of switching frequency is also determined by theefficiency requirement. If high efficiency is the most importantparameter to achieve, then a low switching frequency may be thebest choice.
