The system that is proposed is an early warningsystem that can provide valuable minutes that would help inmitigation of disasters like landslide and flash floods. Thesystem comprises of a wireless sensor network established onslopes of a mountainside which are prone to landslides andflash floods. The network established is based on a zig bee treetopology. For purpose of demonstration, a two node system hasbeen proposed. The nodes will measure precipitation using atipping rain gauge and landslides using buried microphones orpeizo elements that measure pressure changes. These nodeswould report to a base station which would have a zig beecoordinator as a receiver. This unit, called the base unit willcommunicate with a master unit using a long range RFtransmitter. This unit will be suitably located at a location, say,for example at the di strict collector. When rain detected by thenodes is larger in a given time period, so as to produce a flashflood, this information is sent to the base unit which in turnsends it to the master unit. The master unit sounds an alarmand sends SMS to related officials via a GSM module interfacedwith it.
