Energy is an essential requirement foreconomic and social development for any country but, with advent of industrial revolution and sky rocketing ofpetroleum fuel costs in present day has led to growinginterest in alternative fuels which can be produced fromlocally available resources within the country such asalcohol, biodiesel, vegetable oils etc in order to providea suitable substitute to diesel. Increased environmentalawareness and depletion of resources are drivingindustry to develop viable alternative fuels fromrenewable resources that are environmentally moreacceptable. Vegetable oil is a potential alternative fuel. The most detrimental properties of vegetable oils areits high viscosity and low volatility, and thesecause several problems during their long durationusage in compression ignitionengines. The most commonly used method to makevegetable oil suitable for use in CI engines is toconvert it into biodiesel. India is the highest producerof rice bran oil in the world. The estimated yield ofcrude Rice Bran Oil (RBO) is about 8.1 lakh tons ofwhich only 50% is of edible grade, 50% of the totalavailable rice bran oil is left unutilized due to thepresence of active lipase in bran which hydrolyses thetriglyceride to fatty acids and glycerol, as a result theFree Fatty Acid (FFA) content increases making itdifficult to refine, due to the presence of tightlyassociated wax and lack of economic stabilizationmethods most of the bran is used as animal feed or forindustrial application. This study targets at finding theeffects of the engine parameters to compare theperformance of diesel and rice bran biodiesel blends.Rice Bran (RB) blends were found to be substitute fordiesel fuel. By using blends the engines showsexcellent performance properties., also Brake ThermalEfficiency (BTHE), Brake Specific Fuel Consumption(BSFC) and Brake Specific Energy Consumption(BSEC) shows remarkable results when tested.
